What's the difference between a transponder and a proximity fob?

A transponder is a chip inside the key that the immobiliser reads when the key is in the ignition. A proximity or keyless fob talks to the car wirelessly so it unlocks and starts with the fob in your pocket. Both need programming; the methods differ.

Does programming erase my existing keys?

Not usually — a new key is normally added alongside your existing ones. Where you specifically want old keys disabled, we can do that on vehicles whose systems support it.
